Editing a live sequence: what happens to in-progress contacts

You can make changes to a sequence while it is active. What happens to contacts already in the sequence depends on the type of edit.

Safe edits

The following changes apply going forward without affecting contacts already in progress:

  • Editing email copy or subject lines in future steps
  • Changing wait durations on steps that have not yet been reached by any contact
  • Adding new steps at the end of the sequence

Structural changes

Reordering steps, deleting steps, or inserting steps mid-sequence may affect contacts who are currently mid-sequence. Contacts who have already passed a step will not go back to it. Contacts who have not yet reached a changed step will follow the updated path.

Best practice

If you need to make significant structural changes, consider pausing the sequence first, making your edits, then reactivating. This avoids contacts hitting steps in an unexpected order during the edit window.
